“My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” 10th Anniversary Retrospective

Review by Kyle Osmun

Although “808s and Heartbreak” will always be the Kanye album I go back to the most, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” is Kanye at his strongest. MBDTF in a way felt as though it set off the 2010s, in terms of production, being super feature heavy, and being an advertising licensing beast. It’s a very cinematic, self indulgent record. From the more vulnerable and emotional cuts like “Runaway” and “Lost in the Woods,” to the egotistical and heavy tracks like “Monster” and “POWER,” Kanye rarely lets a moment slip without building to some kind of grandness or spectacle.
