“My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” 10th Anniversary Retrospective

Review by Tim (Dad) Turner

I have been asked to listen to, critique, and render my opinion of the Kanye West album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”. First, a disclaimer: I do not regularly listen to Hip-Hop/Rap. My personal taste for this genre leans toward Notorious B.I.G., Warren G, Eminem, etc.

That being said, I do not like this album. Listening to it, I am reminded of Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound”. In Kanye West’s case, it’s more like a “Wall of Noise”. The synthesized vocals are used heavily to mask the lack of Kanye West’s vocal range. A glaring sign of the lack of creativity is the pervasive use of derogatory language and racial slurs.

The only reason I could see was for shock value, not to relate a message or story.

The only reprieve I could get from the “Wall of Noise” was the track: All Of The Lights: Interlude. More emotion and feeling was conveyed in just over 1 minute than the entire sum of the remainder of the album.

My Score: 1 Out Of 10
